Newent United Charity was formed in 1972 by the merger of a number of local charities in the Newent area, the largest being the financial assets of the old Nanfan and Dobyn Almshouse. This formal merger followed an informal collaboration between these funds that dates back to at least 1939. Its mission as stated at the time is:
TO RELIEVE EITHER GENERALLY OR INDIVIDUALLY PERSONS RESIDENT IN THE PARISH OF NEWENT WHO ARE IN CONDITIONS OF NEED, HARDSHIP OR DISTRESS.
The trustees meet twice a year in January and July to make grants from the charity’s income to people and organisations who need help. Note: to be eligible for a grant you must be a resident of the Civil Parish of Newent, or a charitable organisation in the town.
Typically, grants of money are made. However, under some circumstances the Trustees may undertake to purchase a particular item directly.
There are seven Trustees – three nominated by the Town Council, three co-opted from the local community, and the Rector of St. Mary’s Church Newent. The Trustees are supported in their work by the Clerk to the Trustees, currently Dr. Huw Clayton.
The Trustees of Newent United Charity also control Newent Educational and Apprenticing Charity (registered charity no. 311610) which can make grants to local schools or local students for educational purposes.
